Where Water Leaks Cause the Most Damage

Most water damage starts somewhere nobody checks every day. These are the spots where a leak detector earns its place:

• Hot water systems. A failed tank or valve can run for hours in a garage, cupboard or roof space before anyone notices.
• Under sinks and dishwashers. Hoses and tap connections sit behind cupboard doors, so a slow drip can soak cabinetry and flooring for weeks.
• Washing machines and laundries. Inlet hoses are under mains pressure. A burst hose releases a lot of water quickly, often while the house is empty.
• Server and comms rooms. Water and electronics do not mix. An air conditioner drain line or a pipe running through the ceiling is enough to take equipment offline.
• Strata risers and plant rooms. A leak in a shared riser can travel down several floors and into more than one unit before it shows.

How Wireless Water Leak Sensors Work

A water leak sensor sits flat on the floor, or in the base of a cabinet, where water would collect first. It has contacts on its underside. When water bridges those contacts it completes a circuit, and the detector sends an alarm signal wirelessly to its control panel or hub.

The panel then does what it has been set up to do: sound a siren, send a notification to an app, or report the event along with the rest of your alarm system. Because the sensors are wireless and battery powered, there is no cabling to run into a laundry, a kitchen cupboard or a riser cupboard. Battery life on the detectors we install ranges from up to 3 years to up to 5 years, depending on the model.

Some detectors also tell you when the problem is over. Ajax states that once the contacts on the LeaksProtect Jeweller dry out, the detector notifies users that the leak has stopped.

Connecting Leak Sensors to Your Alarm Panel or Phone

Wireless leak detectors are built to work with a particular brand of panel or hub, so the right detector depends on the system you have:

• The HIKVision AX-PRO Wireless Water Leak Detector integrates with HIKVision AX-PRO panels and can be controlled remotely through a mobile app.
• The Ajax LeaksProtect Jeweller is compatible with all Ajax hubs. Ajax says its apps send a notification with the device name, time and location when a leak is detected.
• The Dahua ARD912-W2(868) is part of Dahua’s wireless alarm range. It uses dual communication channels with communication up to 1,200 m, and its sensitivity is adjustable.
